Matt is a cofounder and General Partner at CMD Capital, focusing on leading Seed opportunities in Vertical AI with a generalist lens.
Matt cofounded CMD Capital after spending seven years with ScaleUP Ventures, where he was Partner and subsequently a GP in its Opportunity Fund. While there, he was the lead investor and board member of Sonder (Public), Solink, Renorun, Rewind, and #paid. He also served on the boards of portfolio companies Mavencare (exited), Fusebill (exited), and Medstack.
Matt joined ScaleUP from BDC, where he led the IT Venture Funds investments in Crowdriff, Sonder (Flatbook), Hubdoc, Unsplash, and Crew. He also was involved in conducting the due diligence and sourcing many other deals for the firm. Before joining BDC, Matt raised the Seed and Series “A” round for Semiconductor startup GaN Systems (which exited to Infineon for over $830M USD in 2023), which he joined after graduating with his MBA.
Matt started in Venture as an Analyst at Wesley Clover, best known as billionaire entrepreneur Terry Matthews investment group. While there, he was also the co-founder and CEO of JohnnyVoIP, which developed a web-based VoIP application platform. In the late 90s, he formed several Angel Syndicates in Ottawa leveraging his experience as the youngest Project Coordinator (Manager) at Newbridge Networks (at 18), where he worked in the LMDS wireless group (now part of Alcatel Canada).
In addition to his Master of Business Administration from the Richard Ivey School of Business at Western University, Matt holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in History and Economics from Carleton University.
